Peter Speake-Marin is a highly noteworthy independent watch maker who has his hands in many interesting watches out there. Most important of course is his own brand, Speake-Marin. 2010 sees a new model, and most importantly a new movement - the Speake-Marin in-house made SM2 automatic. The movement is really beautiful. You can see it through the new Marin 1 watch caseback - being able to appreciate not only Speake-Marin's attention to detail and decoration, but also how beautifully it is made. The hallmark of a true luxury movement is that it looks beautiful from a quality standpoint, and that the actually design of it is made with form and function in mind. The automatic rotor has a hidden weight on the bottom so that seeing it from the top makes it look symmetrical. The design (which is carried over to other parts of the movement) of the rotor is very cool looking, like a mixture of classic floral decoration and tribal style tattoos.

Cheng Xue is a doctorate student in marine biology with a specialization in arctic ecology. Originally from the University of Shanghai, Xue is currently working on her doctorate thesis in Stockholm. An excellent diver, she is used to extreme arctic conditions and recently participated in a surveying mission along with a team of fellow students and her Nobel-Prize professor. During the mission, the team came close to a very big paleontological discovery.

So what is the Jules Vernes Instrument watch? A vintage sci-fi relic? A luxury steampunk creation? Or just a cool watch influenced by the father of sci-fi? All of the above really. I want to say early that there are two versions of the watch from a complication standpoint. These are the Jules Verne Instrument # 1 and the Jules Verne Instrument # 2. If you don't know what you are looking for in the watch, it can honestly be a bit of a pain to tell the difference between the two. Each of them have modified Valjoux 7750 automatic movements with a special module on them. The Instrument # 1 has a module that has a GMT hand at the subdial at 9 o'clock, while the Instrument # 2 has a rattrapante (split second chronograph) built onto the 12 hour chronograph that is already part of the Valjoux 7750. Both versions have upgraded date functions. What is the upgrade? Well, basically, you can adjust the date either forward or backwards. Plus, operating the small date hand on the dial located at 3 o'clock is buttery smooth. Really, it is a joy to adjust the date. I never thought I would say that with that particular function, but it is true. The company that makes the special modules does so for a few brands, but movements like this are hard to find.

Like I said, most of the R8 is in white gold and titanium, and I believe a rose gold version will be available as well. There is a little bit of steel in the mechanism, along with some additional precious stones and materials. The video here really shows everything. That is Roland Iten himself showing the R8 MkII. This is the philosophy of fine watch making as applied to other items of daily importance. In fact, Roland's mission as an inventor (like most inventors) is to solve problems. He looks at everyday things a gentlemen does, and finds elegant wants of making them better, safe, more efficient, or just more comfortable. Other interesting inventions of his that are available are special cuff links, shoe lace protectors, a credit card holder, and more to come in the future.

Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic, which should do nicely. Both watches have similar caseback engravings of the original KonTiki ship for which the watch was named. Eterna fitted the watch with a great mesh metal bracelet with a special deployment clasp for micro adjusting it. They all offer an extension segment for use when diving. Being a limited edition, the Eterna Heritage Super KonTiki 1973 watch will be limited to just 1,973 pieces (for the year it was originally introduced). It should be available this fall for about ,300. I really want one of these and am happy to see collector demand high enough for Eterna to price the Super KonTiki back.

Traditionally, haute horlogerie (high watchmaking) focuses on movement design and finishing. It’s not that the case and dial didn’t get attention, they just weren’t the stars of the show. Castro flipped the centuries-old notion on its head and asked why haute horlogerie couldn’t apply to the case. He gives a very compelling answer with his watches.

The watch case is 44mm wide, but wears small due to the thick bezel. The bezel of course is "AP" style with its 12 sided shape. The case and bracelet have a nice heft to it, and I have seen watches priced two or three times as much that don't have the same feel to it. At 10mm thick, the case is pretty thin actually. The crown is nicely substantial, while the chronograph pushers are much smaller and highly rounded.

At its debut, the Calibre 101 set the record for the world’s smallest movement and 81 years later in 2010, it still holds this honor [Ed. Note: check out another article here discussing the life of the Calibre 101 movement]. When you think about all the patents and record-breaking feats announced every year in the world of horology, holding this distinction for such a long time is even more remarkable.

It's also used for sunrise/sunset indication:

The movement contains 98 parts tucked into a space of 14 x 4.8 x 3.4mm and weighs just 1 gram! In the blown up pictures, you can appreciate the amazing detailed engraving work but lose the scale. To give you an idea, the whole mechanism is smaller than the tip of a sharpened pencil. It would seem a team of Lilliputians from Jonathan Swift’s satiric tale would be the perfect craftspeople to work in such a tiny space. But alas, they are busy warring with their neighbors in Blefusco.

The manner in which the movement was designed and implemented is pretty cool. Celsius wanted to make sure that using the phone in some manner worked with the mechanical movement - so the opening and closing part goes to that desire. The tourbillon and the watch movement is supposed to have some manner of shock absorption to protect it from the inevitable roughing around that it will experience. At the same time though, this is a phone you need to be much more careful with. Drop it and the watch movement part of it will likely be kaput. This is the same with all delicate mechanical watches. The movement has sapphire crystal over it and is in a water resistant enclosure.

These images remind me of those non-sequitur motivational posters that were common in the 90's that showed up in offices to replace "fake" office art that is meant to just take up white wall space. These days such posters are mostly gone, again replaced by framed patterns on the wall that look about as bad as the fabric on bus seats designed to hide stains. I think Ulli Kampelmann might have designed a few of those.
